Two weeks ago for the first time, we attended the Roundup & Open House held Saturday, October 24th at historic Empire Ranch near Sonoita, about 45 minutes from Hacienda del Desierto Bed & Breakfast in Tucson, Arizona. What great fun it was to watch highly trained sheep and cattle dogs efficiently round up their charges. During another time at the arena, expert riders, who also are marksmen and women, shot at balloons while zigzagging around the arena with great speed. Cowboys also demonstrated their skills at rounding up cattle.
In several historic rooms of the ranch house, individual storytellers, told of the life and experiences of children and adults who had lived at the ranch during the 1800’s into the 20th century. We got a real feel for those early homesteaders and the lives they led.
There was also an area where 4-H’ers showed off the animals they were raising. How proud they were!
Mariachis from Nogales High School performed with great expertise, and the crowd loved them. Other Southern Arizona musicians played at various hours of the morning and afternoon for those dining outside during the event. There was ample food for all at reasonable prices from a variety of food vendors.
The events were all free so entire families could enjoy a day’s entertainment. There is so much to see and do in the surrounding Tucson area. Guests at Hacienda del Desierto who choose to stay only one or two nights are really depriving themselves of some great experiences.
